We recommend that you use a system without ACT!. This will totally eliminate any possibilities of corrupting your working environment. If this can't be done, then please be aware of the caution notice in Step 3.
1. Create a Working Folder.
In the Root Folder (C:\) create a folder that will be used for the export. This will be something like C:\ACT_Export_MyDatabase_2021_01_01 This folder will need full control access permissions. Because it's on the root, this is usually the case. We also recommend using a distinct folder for each database you plan to export.
2. Put a backup copy of the database in the Working Folder.
From ACT! create a backup copy of the database. Select File> then Back Up> then Database. Make sure the Include Attachments box is UNCHECKED. If the size of the .zip file becomes too large, some versions of ACT! will have issues. If you want attachments, then move the Attachments folder separately. There's more information about attachments here Dealing with Attachments
3. Install an instance of SQL Express.
According to Microsoft, you can have up to 10 instances of SQL Express on a system. Each is totally autonomous. But, ACT! never ceases to surprise. So, unless there's no other alternative, we recommend that a system free of an ACT! production database is used. You can find a copy of SQL Express on Microsoft's web site. Or, we have a link here. SQL Express Instance Allow the install to run accepting all the default options. The SQL Express instance will install as "{your system name}\SQLEXPRESS"
4. Install and run the Exporter Software.
Download and install the Exporter Software. Download Exporter
